Gabrielle Canales, 18, was caught on camera slipping her hand into a tip jar while on a ride with two friends in New York in an Uber.
She thought she was being sneaky and driver Mohammed H. Bhuiyan wouldn’t realise but she didn’t know her every move was being recorded. Footage shows the group chatting with each other quietly in the back of the cab.
As the car comes to a stop, Canales, who was sitting in the middle seat, reaches towards the tip jar. Looking directly at the camera, she dips her hand into the jar, grabs a handful of notes and dashes out of the car. Hearing some commotion behind him, Mohmmed turns to look at the back and realises all his money has been taken.
The video, which was originally posted in August, went viral last weekend.
Now, Canales has been identified as the woman involved. Posting a picture to her Instagram account, she appears to gloat about the incident, saying she ‘only’ took five dollars from the jar. She claims she later returned the money to him.
Her Instagram account has since been deleted and she has been banned from using the app. Mohammed said he was advised by Uber to report the matter to police.
An Uber spokesman told Metro.co.uk: ‘What’s been shown has no place on our app and the rider’s access to the app has been removed.’
