The recent seizure of trailers loads of alcoholic beverages and consequent destruction of its contents by the Kano State Hisbah Board, obviously reinforces the argument namely, that the fiscal architecture of Nigeria needs a total overhaul.

Since the reintroduction of the sharia law in 2002 by the administration of governor “Rabiu Musa kwankwaso” the activities of the hisbah police has brought tremendous damage and pain to the daily lives of the millions of non indigenous people residing in the state.

The recent seizure and consequent destruction of trailer loads of alcohol beverages running into hundreds of millions of naira by hisbah police underscores the untold story of the non indigenous Nigerians residing in Kano.

These unwarranted attacks by the hisbah police of kano is well documented by several news media including so many notable newspaper houses. In so many cases too numerous to mention, the members of the hisbah police has used dangerous weapons to maim drivers of trucks and their conductors.

These development as agreed by some observers is a ploy by some vested interest to cripple southern businesses and ensure the enforcement of sharia law across the length and breadth of the state in utter disregard to the constitution of the federal republic of Nigeria.

While it may be contested in favour of kano state that it reserves the right to enact laws for the good governance and security of its people, such laws must be in consonance with the spirit of the constitution of the federal republic of Nigeria.

Section 10 of the Nigerian constitution state that no state shall adopt any religion as its official religion, what that provision means is that, Nigeria is a secular state and all religion adherents should be allowed to thrive.

However, it’s a well documented evidence that hisbah, the Kano state Islamic police has constantly observed this provision of the constitution in total breach.

This well-considered editorial rendering puts in sharp focus the hypocrisy of the so-called Sharia states including Kano, and further resonates the restructuring question.

Which brings me to the timely reaction of Afenifere, the pan-Yoruba socio-cultural group, which described the destruction as “hypocritical” arguing that, a state (Kano) which collects one of the highest amounts from VAT generated from other states where such beverages are sold should not be enjoying the benefits from goods it has prohibited contrary to Nigerian laws.

Sadly too, the dealers of this alcohol beverages pay huge sums of money to the Kano state internal revenue service as well as local government revenue agents. what injustice can be greater than this.

Perhaps, the time has come for the federal ministry of information and culture to educate these sharia complaint sates on the right and culture of other Nigerians.

For instance, the igbo speaking people of the eastern region of the country have a tradition that allow for responsible consumption of alcohol beverages at marriage, burial, festive ceremonies etc. while the Hausa Fulani majority of the northern Nigeria view the fura and nunu as an integral part of their social cultural heritage.

Therefore, these attacks is view by observers as not against the few alcohol dealers but against the social cultural heritage of the Igbo people who constitute the majority of the non indigenous people residing in sabon gari area of the state.

It is worthy to note that, the alcohol beverages are brought into sabon a place inhabited by mostly Christians in well covered trucks in efforts to respect the religious sensitivity of the majority the Muslim population in the state.

The Nigerian constitution provide for freedom of worship as well as the Quran 2:256 which says there’s no compulsion in religion.

The tourism industry in the state can not thrive without accommodating expatriates and those whose social life includes consumption of alcohol.

Dubai (U.A.E ) which is an Islamic country, in her effort to grow her tourism industry which has become world class, had to designate an expanse of land where alcohol consumption is not prohibited.

In in view of the fact that, his excellency governor “Abdulahi musa Ganduje” is known all over the country as a bridge builder and lover of peace gives the impression that, he is oblivious of the extent of damage going on in the
hands of Hisbah police leaving in trail sorrow, tears and blood capable of snow balling into disturbances of pubic peace and riots.

Its therefore expedient, to call on the governor to intervene to protect non indigenous people in the state and to grow the tourism industry to prevent people resorting to self help.

Nigerians especially the civil organizations are urged to prevail on the kano state government to allow non indigenous people live and practice their cultural heritage as as prescribed in the annals of their norms and values without encumbrances.
